How the iPhone Transformed the World, But Wasn’t Revolutionary
With all the hooplah when it was released in 2007, you’d think the iPhone represented a huge revolution in technology: wholly new--something never dreamed about or seen before.
It didn’t and it wasn’t.
Its interface concept had already been well established on the iPod and the Newton.
Touch screens were part of earlier phones and tablets, including Apple’s own Newton.
And as far as more memory, better cameras, and faster mobile connectivity? Top-of-the-line Nokia phones beat out the iPhone without breaking into a sweat.
What made the iPhone revolutionary is that it transformed the essence of what a phone was. It created a seismic shift in our thinking about the nature of the phone itself.
Instead of giving us an upgrade for person-to-person communication, Steve Jobs gave us a full-fledged, hand-held computer that could also make calls and browse the internet.
This paradigm shift in phone technology wasn’t due to some tech innovation in hardware the way the CPU, hard drive, or RAM was. The genius of the iPhone was in its software--software that enabled existing hardware technology to be used in wholly new, amazing, and irresistible ways.
As Steve Jobs said, “Creativity is just connecting things.”
To repeat: The iPhone was not innovative in the traditional way we think of tech innovation. But it did transform the mobile phone business, the internet economy; and in a lot of ways, it changed society as a whole.
And that’s why we’re so excited to introduce the new version of our Be Your Own Best Coach program to you.
How Be Your Own Best Coach Will Boost Your Career and Transform Your Life
When it comes to helping you get ahead in your career or achieve your personal goals, Be Your Own Best Coach does for participants what the iPhone did for communication.
Be Your Own Best Coach is big, different, and new.
In creating Be Your Own Best Coach, we don’t offer you a new version of the same old, same old.
Instead, we have synthesized breakthrough discoveries and landmark developments into a rigorous, cohesive system for lasting change.
Those discoveries and developments come from cognitive and social psychology, neuroscience, behavior design and economics, and linguistics to radically improve how you think about yourself . . . and how you manage all the factors that contribute to your success, happiness, and sense of fulfillment--on the job or at home.
And it applies to you, no matter what goals you’re trying to achieve or what bumps on the road you’re hitting trying to get there.
You see, Be Your Own Best Coach is a universal system for professional and personal transformation that puts the best science-based theory and practice into action in three ways.
Be Your Own Best Coach uses our powerful SPRINGS approach that puts you totally in the driver’s seat for change. We don’t pretend to know exactly what you’re going through. Only you can know that.
The reason SPRINGS works is a radical shift is because it’s solution-focused, person-centered, and relationship-based. It focuses on impact and outcomes by stimulating curiosity and helping you develop the mindset for sustainable, high performance.
It doesn’t pledge allegiance to only way of looking at human behavior and performance. Instead, it is based on the most current and cutting-edge discoveries from psychology, cognitive- and neuro-science, behavioral economics, behavior design, and human performance.Be Your Own Best Coach uses our proven Y-PET framework for change to help you boost your self-leadership skills in all three major areas--intrapersonal, interpersonal, and responsible decision-making.
Effective, lasting change is based on each element in the Y-PET framework (you, people, environment, and things). Each element exerts its influence on you by motivating or enabling you. And, each element interacts with the others.
Research conducted over decades demonstrates unequivocally that accounting for each element dramatically boosts your chance of success. Our Y-PET framework gives you a way to do it in a way that’s systematic and deliberate. You walk away with your own unique Self-Leadership Map, which is the culmination of your five-weeks of learning using the Solution-Focused StoryCrafting method. It’s a method that we’ve created over the last few years based on best practices from Harvard Business School, the Stanford Storytelling Project, and Columbia’s Division of Narrative Medicine.
What’s the Back Story? Why Now?
With all the great stuff already out there that promises to boost your career and/or transform your life, who needs Be Your Own Best Coach?
You know the expression, “Can’t see the forest for the trees?” It’s easy to become so focused on one detail or aspect of a problem or project that we miss the larger picture.
We fail to appreciate that reaching our goal by breaking through the tape at the end of the race is not the whole story. The rest of the story is about sustaining what we’ve achieved. That’s an entirely different story.
The truth is, the way we achieve success is not the same way we sustain it.
Unfortunately, when it comes to making lasting changes in our lives, we often take a kind of singular focus. For example, to get ahead in our career, we focus on the resume and train to upskill. To improve our health, we take a hard look at our diet and change what we eat.
These “one off” strategies can work--but only sometimes and not forever . . . and usual, not for very long. Invariably, we end up struggling with the “same old, same old” and falling back into our old, familiar habits.
So How is Be Your Own Best Coach Different?
Before we get into how it’s different and why that difference is a game-changer, let's first talk about where we came from, and how and why we developed Be Your Own Best Coach.
Together, we have a combined experience of 80 years in behavior design, human performance, and training.
We met a few years ago after we’d both gotten certified as Tiny Habits® coaches by BJ Fogg at Stanford University. You could say it was a match made in human-performance heaven because we have a shared language based on our involvement in social, behavioral, and cognitive sciences; writing and journalism; and athletics and the arts.
And, we both have a burning desire to help people do their best to be their best. We firmly believe that each person has tremendous--usually untapped--potential.
But, instead of hitting the ball out of the park, a lot of people get bogged down with the voice of a harsh inner critic in their ear, bad habits, stress and overwhelm. Their relationships suffer, whether on the job or at home, because they don’t know how to set clear boundaries or manage the normal conflicts that are part of all human relationships.
What’s more, a lot of times, people haven’t allowed themselves to ask themselves what they really want in life . . . and from life. What really matters to them.
So, careers get stalled or don’t even take off, relationships falter, and people end up disengaged not only as work but in life in general.
But through Be Your Own Best Coach, we’ve helped people rewrite the scripts that have shaped their stories up to now. We’ve opened the door for people to develop the critical self-leadership skills that enable them to craft their own stories of enduring success.
We’ve been able to do that because one of our shared strengths is our unique ability to synthesize ideas and resources from many different disciplines and consolidate them into a science-based system that delivers measurable positive results for everyone who works with us.
All of which came together to help us create Be Your Own Best Coach.
