It Takes A System

HI!

There’s one important lesson that keeps being hammered home for us about how to adapt in changing times. A lesson about how to manage to do what it takes to be the best version of ourselves, doing our best at home and work, living the life we want.

If you take even the quickest glance at the media, whether it’s professional or for everyday people, it looks like it’s just a matter of finding the right strategy, tool, or technique.

Decades ago it was root-cause analysis, Gantt charts, and kaizen for companies. In the personal realm, it might have included tarot cards, having your astrological chart done, or joining a consciousness raising group, drumming circle, or sweat lodge.

Those may sound like has-been’s from what seems like almost ancient history.

And it’s not that each of these, in their own way and in a certain context, doesn’t provide someone with some kind of benefit.

But the underlying motivation that drives people’s interests in both Gantt charts and tarot cards is the same. It’s the search for the holy grail, the secret to eternal youth, the magic pink pill. It’s the never-ending quest for the ONE thing that can transform failure to success, despair to hope.

The problem is that there isn’t one thing that can transform your life and help you live it exactly as you want. And it also may not be easy.

Oh, sure. There may be one thing that propels you into action, one thing that gives you the hope and confidence you need to act, or one event that opens your eyes to possibilities awaiting you.

The problem is that we often get tunnel-visioned about what we need to do to better our lives. We reach out with a crying neediness for that one strategy, technique, or tool.

But just the one “right” thing can’t address all the factors that can make or break you.

That’s behind the one lesson that is at the heart of our Be Your Own Best Coach training program is that it takes a village . . . and a lot more.

Here are some quotes from people who’ve trained with us:

"Be Your Own Best Coach was an intriguing, enjoyable, and an overall excellent course. Learning different ways to practice positive interactions has helped me personally as well as professionally. With my work in sales, the skills I learned during this course are invaluable.”

--Ryan L.

"This course has had such a profound impact on me. I learned how important celebration is to make change, and I now see how bad habits can be broken and how tiny changes are more effective to sustain change. The entire course was engaging and packed full of interesting concepts.

--Jitha N.

Be Your Own Best Coach provides a framework for improving my life and wellbeing with science backed approaches. Now I feel more confident about making changes in my life and dealing with the obstacles in this process.

Can you feel the energy and enthusiasm in these students’ words?

These quotes are testimonies to the strong belief that anchors everything we teach.

It’s not an either-or proposition. It’s a yes-and.

It’s summed up by the simple children’s nursery rhyme about head bone connected to the neck bone, neck bone connected to the shoulder bone, shoulder bone connected to the arm bone, and so forth.

Notice that we start with the headbone? This rhyme may be simple child’s play, but it reveals a profound truth.

What’s in the headbone?

It’s your mind: the conductor in the control booth that runs the rest of you!

Indeed, the rest of you--your neck, shoulder, arm, and the rest of your body, enables you to put what’s in your mind into action. And action is the behaviors that produce the results you want in your life.

Whether it’s your physical health, mental health, career, relationships, finances, or even your spiritual self, it takes harnessing the mind to drive the right action to get you where you want to go.

And that can’t be done with just one strategy, tool, or technique, no matter how great each of them is.

It takes a system.

That’s what being your own best coach is. It’s having a system that brings together what you need to do to shift your mindset and change behavior. It’s what maximizes your shot at success during these turbulent times.

Be Your Own Best Coach offers a complete and comprehensive program that opens the door to a wholly different--and better--way to approach the change process.

First, we’ll uncover the kind of mindset that keeps you trapped in a particular way of thinking and that limits your vision for what’s possible. We’ll show you the science behind it all so you understand exactly how wrong some of the commonly-held beliefs are about natural talent, intelligence, and capability.

Then, you’ll learn 4 simple, practical strategies to shift your mindset that will expand your thinking exponentially.

Learning concepts and looking at strategies isn’t enough, however.

Remember the saying, “Practice makes perfect?”

(Do we need to add that aiming for perfection is a good way to tie yourself up in knots?)

Instead, we say, “Practice makes better.”

Taking one step after another in an ongoing learning process using deliberate practice is how all top performers make it to the winner’s circle.

So Be Your Own Best Coach features hands-on experiential practice sessions to give you what you need to transform thinking into action.

Next comes the action piece. This is where we talk about behavior and the science of behavior change.

Be Your Own Best Coach moves into action by first attacking the many myths and misperceptions about behavior and behavior change that have led so many people to simply throw up their hands and give up on change.

Then, it gives you a solid system to drive a self-change process that’s unique to you, that addresses your own needs, is tailored to your own interests and preferences, and is aligned with the values that you want to live by.

Within the Be Your Own Best Coach system you’ll learn many strategies, tools, and techniques. And, we’ll show you exactly how to put them into practice.

First, you’ll act as a scientist carrying out experiments to see how they both work and fit for you.

Then, you decide what to keep, what to tweak, and what to toss.

Ultimately, you’ll end up with your own personalized approach to living life the way you want today and into the future.

By the way, you’ll hear us say over and over that what you use to make positive change in your life, and make it stick, must “work and fit.”

Those are critical, and you need both. That’s because “work” means that whatever you’re using to shift your mindset and change behavior delivers the results you want. It works.

“Fit” means it reflects who you are, what you need, what you care about, and what you like. That’s what makes change stick.

It’s the difference between red and green apples. As the saying goes, “an apple a day may keep the doctor away.” But if you love red apples but hate green, you may be able to choke down a green apple for the first few days, but it’s not something you will keep up day in and day out.

That’s what “works” and “fits” is all about.

Be Your Own Best Coach gives you a system for change that includes strategies, tools, and techniques. But your self-change journey also includes simple but powerful methods to fire up your imagination and creativity as you walk through a process of exploration and discovery.

That’s where a lot of magic happens.

Until later,

Glen and Deborah
