Strengthen Your Mental and Emotional Resilience, Reduce Stress, and Build Unshakeable Confidence
How to Cultivate Empowering Self-Talk in the Face of Persistent Negativity
You know those moments—it’s late at night, and you’re staring at the ceiling, reliving something you did or said that didn’t quite hit the mark. It could have been seemingly insignificant—a mistake at work, a missed deadline, a completely avoidable misunderstanding with a loved one, or an awkward interaction. Regardless of what it was, you hear that voice in your head telling you that you’ve failed again, that you’re not good enough. You feel ashamed wondering how you’ll ever live it down.
The next day, that voice creeps in again, telling you, "You’re a loser," or demanding, “How could you have been such a dope and done something like that?!"
You feel discouraged and defeated . . . and the negative self-talk continues unabated, convincing you that each slip-up proves how flawed you are. It’s all so exhausting. You just wish you could stop it.
Manage Your Self-Talk
So It Becomes Your Friend
Now imagine waking up each day with curiosity, clarity, and courage, with a deep sense of confidence that you have what it takes to navigate life's challenges. All systems–from your internalized world that drives your self-talk to your outer world of action–are a “go.”
Imagine that this strong and resilient core of you at your best is present day in and day out. Sure, it may fluctuate a little, but it’s always there for you in some way, grounding and anchoring you so you do what really counts for you no matter what.
The self-talk that went on in your head that seemed impossible to tame and held you back in ways small and large, is now like an old friend–encouraging, helpful, insightful, but also sometimes still negative and annoying. No matter. Your new way of managing self-talk enables you to make it a powerful resource that you can call on anytime.
Quest Begins Nov 11th. Registration Ends Nov 8th.
Newton’s Third Law of Physics Makes It Clear
Why Traditional Solutions to Negative Self-Talk Fail
If you’ve been held back by a harsh inner critic and negative self-talk, you’re not alone.
And if you’ve tried any of the many “fixes” out there–even recommended by some experts–but still failed miserably, join the club!
Solid scientific research reveals the emperor’s new clothes. Here are only a few examples often recommended as antidotes for negative self-talk that flat out don’t work:
Positive affirmations
When your current mindset strongly contradicts the affirmation, the affirmations can feel unrealistic and even increase anxiety or negative self-perception. If your self-esteem isn’t quite as high as you’d like it, positive affirmations can create cognitive dissonance, making the negative thoughts even more prominent.Thought suppression
Way too many people think they can simply "shut down" their negative thoughts by suppressing them. Unfortunately, thought suppression often backfires and leads to a rebound effect, causing the thoughts to return even more intensely. The bottom line is that your mind–and your self-talk–often have minds of their own and aren’t subject to your conscious control.Focusing solely on positives
Viewing the world through rose-colored glasses works if you’re cheering on your toddler who’s just learning to walk, but artificial positivity quickly can turn toxic. In fact, “toxic positivity” can lead people to feel profound guilt and shame for having negative thoughts, which only fuels the inner critic and its negative self-talk.
These “solutions” are perfect examples of Newton’s third law of physics, which is that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction: If object A exerts a force on object B, object B also exerts an equal and opposite force on object A.
What actually works is what we’ve mentioned briefly in passing–curiosity, clarity, courage, and confidence–with some calm, compassion, and connectedness mixed in.

Equip Yourself with RISE:
The Ultimate Solution for Creating Effective Self-Talk
Why Join the Self-Talk Mastery Quest?
Most people make the mistake of thinking that the solution to the problem of negative self-talk is to change it from negative to positive. Big problem! As we’ve shown, that “solution” is an overly simplistic “fix” doomed to fail.
Instead of serving you up more of the same old, same old, we’ve created a powerful two-week quest based on our unique science-based solution-focused approach.
Over the course of two weeks, you’ll learn about RISE, a framework for action grounded in our solution-focused practice.
RISE stands for Recognize, Imagine, Support, and Empower. It’s a formal, organizing structure that helps you use effective self-talk to define what you want for your life, how you want to show up in the world, and what you’ll be doing when you’re living a life of rich and satisfying meaning.
RISE then takes you on a journey to identify what’s already working for you, setting future-oriented goals, and creating sustainable change. The RISE framework guides you through four key areas:
Recognize: Be open, aware, and accepting of your current self-talk. Notice the strengths, skills, and resources you already have that you may have overlooked, underestimated, discounted, or not appreciated
Imagine: Use the power of the mind, mental imagery, and language of effective self-talk to project yourself into the future you want to live with vivid descriptions that wire the brain for progress
Support: Speak to yourself in a kind and compassionate way, so you can own and be at peace with all parts of yourself instead of perpetuating the internal war that happens with negative self-talk
Empower: Reinforce self-efficacy and personal agency. Use a highly strategic self-complimenting process that accounts for what you’re doing to make progress and how you’re doing it
